A house divided

In Matthew 25, it is written that Jesus told the Pharisees, "Any kingdom divided against itself is laid to waste; and any city or house divided against itself will not stand."

What does it mean to be a house divided? How long can a foundation support a division? How is a divided house overcome; Is it patched? Fumigated? Rebuilt entirely?

Without being rebuilt entirely, won't there always be a visible reminder of the division? That molding that is out of place, the odd color tile that is left over, the patchwork showing through a fresh coat of paint. Without demolishing the old, clearing the rubble down to the foundation, gutting the walls, ripping apart the wiring...without addressing the flaw in the foundation on which the house was built...won't the division continue to resurface over time?

Do I want a patched house, masking division, or do I want a firm foundation, on which a beautiful perfected house is built?

What are the divisions in my house? Where does the foundation need to be leveled? As my house crumbles, I suddenly have a thread of optimism. Clearing away the rubble is hard work - heart breaking, devastating, labored work, but, then and only then can the foundation be firmly established, and a new and beautiful house built.
