Streamlog - 2012

Got to spend the day out in the Skagit Valley evaluating the effects of a restoration project on existing habitat in the Davis Slough. Was a great day and good reminder of the influence of stable large wood on stream systems. This is a picture of a stable large wood assemblage that spans the channel causing sediment deposition upstream and scour downstream of the structure thus influencing the channel profile and stream hydraulics. And as you can see by the moss on the channel spanning piece large wood can be surprisingly stable in fluvial environments (even though it floats).
