History


At the end of the decade of 1950, several Muslim community leaders in East Java propose the idea to establish an Islamic college that shelter under the Ministry of Religious Affairs. To realize this idea, they held a meeting in Jombang in 1961. During the meeting, Professor Soenarjo, Rector of State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga, present as a resource to convey basic ideas as the basis for the establishment of the necessary college religion is Islam. In the final session of this historic meeting, the forum endorsed several important decisions are: (1) Establish IAIN Establishment Committee, (2) Established the Faculty of Sharia in Surabaya, and (3) Establishes the Faculty of Tarbiyah in Malang. Subsequently, on October 9, 1961, established the Foundation Board of Faculty of Islamic Endowments and Welfare Faculty of Tarbiyah the work plan as follows:

Held a preparatory establishment IAIN Sunan Ampel consisting of the Faculty of Sharia at the Faculty of Tarbiyah in Surabaya and Malang.
Provide land for construction of Campus IAIN area 8 (eight) Acres located at Jalan A. No Yani. 117 Surabaya.
Providing housing accommodation for the professors.

On October 28, 1961, Minister of Religious Affairs issued Decree No. 17/1961, to authorize the establishment of the Faculty of Sharia at the Faculty of Tarbiyah in Surabaya and Malang. Then on October 1, 1964, Faculty Ushuluddin in Karachi was inaugurated by Minister for Religious Affairs No. SK. 66/1964.

Starting from 3 (three) faculty, the Minister of Religious Affairs deems it necessary to issue Decree No. 20/1965 on the establishment of IAIN Sunan Ampel based in Surabaya, as described above. History records that without taking a long time, IAIN Sunan Ampel was able to grow rapidly. In the period between 1966-1970, has IAIN Sunan Ampel 18 (eighteen) faculty spread over 3 (three) provinces: East Java, East Kalimantan and West Nusa Tenggara.

However, when the accreditation of faculties in IAIN applied, 5 (five) of 18 (eighteen) is closed for the combined faculty to other faculty that is accredited and adjacent location. Furthermore the government regulation number 33 of 1985, the Faculty of Tarbiyah Samarinda released and handed over its management to the IAIN Antasari Banjarmasin. In addition, faculty Tarbiyah Bojonegoro moved to Surabaya and its status is changed to the faculty Tarbiyah IAIN Surabaya. In subsequent growth, has IAIN Sunan Ampel 12 (twelve) faculty are spread across the East Java and 1 (one) faculty in Mataram, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Now, IAIN Sunan Ampel concentrated only on 5 (five) faculty parent, all located on the campus of Surabaya.
