The view from Flanders

A view from the other side of the country

I happened to be in Marcinelle, near Charleroi, today, on the site of the old Bois du Cazier colliery. The site is now a museum, commemorating the catastrophy of August 8, 1956, when, due to an accident, a fire broke out that left 262 workers of twelve different nationalities dead. It was the worst accident to happen in a Belgian coalmine.
