Stratford-upon-Avon

Having missed getting up to Stratford on Shakespeare Day on April 23rd, I again failed to get there on May 3rd, which is the true date, having been converted into the Gregorian calendar currently in use.  However, on Wednesday, almost by chance, I and ChristieScruff found ourselves there en route from somewhere else, and celebrated the Bard by having a cappuccino on the patio outside the RSC, overlooking the River Avon. You can see a part of the RSC in this picture, taken after we had continued our walk, as well as Holy Trinity Church on the horizon.

The weather had been poor all day, but magically improved as we found ourselves in Stratford, and was fine throughout our time there. We were cheered by the swans and geese and the boaters on the river, all the things going on and the beauty of the town.

This picture also forms part of my Rivers series, in particular the River Avon. "Avon" comes from the Old Brythonic word "abona" meaning, not unexpectedly, "river". Two rivers of the name flow through the county I live in, Wiltshire, and there is another in Devon (yet to be photographed by me) and two in Scotland.  The River Afan in Wales is also sometimes anglicised with the same name, but the most famous River Avon must be the Warwickshire Avon, largely because of its worldwide Shakespearian associations.
