Day 18 - Gallup, NM to Flagstaff, AZ

Perfunctory breakfast in the Comfort Inn and the. Hit the I40 yet again, heading west to Flagstaff, Arizona. Stopped en route at the Petrified Forest National Park and drove the loop through it. Stunning varied scenery, especially the 'petrified' fossilised logs scattered around, displaying a myriad of colours. Never seen anything like it and it's up there with the other national parks in the US that we've seen, with the added bonus of there being nobody else around.

Lunch was a deli sandwich from Safeway in Holbrook (the only way of getting just a sandwich without all the extras...), then we rolled into Flagstaff - nice to be back having last visited over ten years ago on our honeymoon. The Motel Dubeau (a Route 66 original) was home for the night. - I suspect the mattress dated from the original Route 66 days, but for $58 it was an adequate pit stop. Quirky....

Flagstaff is very laid back so we had organic tea lattes in a funky cafe, beers in a brew pub and delicious nibbles and wine in a newish bar. All good.
