Istana Kampong Glam

This is the Istana Kampong Glam or Sultan's Palace in Singapore.

The original wooden building was built by Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor in 1819, on land given by the British East India Company (EIC).  The Sultan lived there until about 1835.

The current structure was commissioned by Sultan Hussein's eldest son, Sultan Ali Iskander Shah of Johor Riau and was built between 1835 and 1843.  It was designed by the colonial architect of Singapore George Coleman, who built the Old Parliament House and the Armenian Church as well.

Sultan Ali's eldest son Tengku Alam lived there until his death in 1891.

The Istana was restored in 2004 as part of the Malay Heritage Centre according to Coleman's original design.
