rabbit island

G suggested we go swimming at Rabbit Island late afternoon and then have a BBQ by the beach.  GD and I were very wary of that suggestion as the sea in NZ is usually very cold, however we did take our togs and towels with us.  However we couldn't believe how warm the water was - warmer than the sea at Coolangatta when we were there in August!!

The only drawback was the wind and the rough sea, however that meant it was quick and easy to get wet and jumping the waves was fun, if not a little exhausting.

Then off to find a sheltered spot and a wood fired BBQ which wasn't in use.  Perfect for cooking a few sausages to be wrapped in bread and smothered in tomato sauce - a good old-fashioned  kiwi BBQ :-)  The island had been crowded with family groups but they drifted off before we were ready to cook so plenty of space for us.
