Latest Sunrise

I learnt something new this year. Although the shortest day is on December 21st, sunrise times continue to get later. For Birmingham the latest sunrise of the year is at 8.18am from 28th Dec - 31st Dec. They did explain why but my brain didn't understand it. I'm not very good with moving objects.
