Belem

The Jeronimos Monastery in Belem is a big tourist attraction even in December but there's plenty of space to lose the tourists, especially in the big modern art gallery where we had a fantastic lunch. Belem is really where the Tagus River starts to meet the sea and the air is fresh and there is a sense of the excitement of those who set off from here to discover new worlds, perhaps best captured in this monument.
