Anchors Aweigh

We are in Richmond, Virginia for a couple of days,  We had not spent any time here in about 20 years and since it is only 1 1/2 hours from home, it seemed like a nice option.  We spent the first day at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts which is quite a lovely art museum.  A beautiful modern addition has more than doubled its size since we were last here.  We had looked forward to seeing the Mellon’s Impressionist and Post Impressionist collection, however it was closed because of a roof repair.  In addition, we had looked forward to seeing the fine collection of Fabergé, but that gallery was also closed for renovation.  Instead, we enjoyed their fine collection of Art Nouveau and Art Deco as well as the special exhibition of over 200 treasures from the Forbidden City.

Our second day was spent immersed in Virginia history, with tours of the Museum of the Confederacy, the Confederate White House and the Virginia State Capitol…. all well worth seeing.

This anchor chain is from the first iron-clad warship, the CSS Virginia which fought the USS Monitor in the Battle of Hampton Roads during the Civil War.  The chain and anchor reside just outside the Museum of the Confederacy.
