'Winter Holiday'

is such a life-affirming book. Not a trace of unkindness: lots of generosity, mutual support, and plenty of adventure with a thrilling climax. Not to mention one of the finest geek heroes and role models, whose knowledge of centres of gravity trumps misted spectacles when the need arises.

Thanks to my friend C for reminding me of it. Now stuck in 'Swallowdale'. I wish I could remember how my Dad came by a copy with Arthur Ransome's signature. Did they meet somewhere?

A day of thick mist, banana bread baking and almost starting out on some work. But it will be the better for some quiet contemplation.
