Mist

When he left, she missed him so much, it hurt. It was the defining thing in her life. She might as well have introduced herself to people by saying "Hi, I'm Sarah and I miss Geoff".

And, like someone who can't stop feeling with a tongue-tip the gap where a tooth used to be, it was almost reassuring to check that, yes, she still missed him. And so she was still Sarah.

And then, one day, as she said his name, silently, to herself, and waited for the familiar feeling of comforting loss, she surprised herself by deciding that, not only did she not miss him anymore, but she wasn't completely certain that she remembered what he looked like.

And now she missed missing him.
