The Lighted Life

Go Sutton Go

Sutton moved into the neighborhood a few short months ago, just two doors over from ours. I had heard too much about his art to ignore it. So, this afternoon, I found myself knocking on his family’s door to introduce myself.

His paintings, drawings and, yes, photographs populated his bedroom and the house. They were jaw dropping good. Wait………….he is 11. Make that, they were over-the-top and brilliant for any age. Many had ribbons hanging from them, including three notable photographs that were exhibited at this year’s State Fair. In this bulging artistic community, that is no small feat. But his world is just not art and he can fill your ear with sports trivia. He has many well-studied interests.

This prodigy has drive and his mind has multiple dimensions. His intensity and seriousness are clearly evident and, as with many artists, he is shy. If you really want to get to know him, just hang a bit, view his art and let him tell you about his methods of capturing light and dimension, be it with a pen or a brush or an electronic sensor. He has the gift. And he has the eye.

It will be fun to watch this talent flourish, just down the block. Perhaps he can teach an old man new tricks. I struggle to find an artistic voice but he has his at one-fifth of my years.

Go, Sutton, go.
