Colonising

Nature is truly amazing, this plastic buoy attatched to a boat on the slipway is being colonised by lichen, which is very common on rocks by the shore and must be well able to cope with a drenching of salt water. From what I remember they are able to absorb minerals from the rock surface but what nutrients are being taken up here?!
