Or maybe it's going to eat them... but I'm pretty sure this beetle is tending the eggs, not destroying them.

I believe it is an Antipodean Ladybird (Harmonia antipoda),  native to New Zealand, though all the images I can find of it are really bad quality, making identification hard. This one has far more distinguished 'zigzags' than the online sources, but I don't know what else it could be.
