Housing in Speke, Liverpool

Speke, Kirkby and Halewood were three of the largest edge of city developments built largely after the second war. By the late 1950's there were 6000 council houses and about 25,000 people in Speke. Most of the flats have now gone, and have been converted Into bungalows or houses. The estate lies between the airport and "Fords", (now Jaguar/Land Rover). In 2000, the deprivation statistics put Speke as the second most deprived ward in the whole country.

Today the weather was fairly wild. A cold wind, rain and some snow and hail. This picture shows some fairly typical Speke housing. The Fords factory can just be seen at the bottom.
