Alcacer do Sal

This could be and was a pretty little place. It's now blighted by neglect (this photo is in one of the main streets) and official stupidity. The main feature is the riverside promenade of nearly a mile, with all the little bars and cafes facing on to it. At the start of the tourist season the road is closed, it is being dug up to lay pipes and new sewers, not just a bit at a time, but the whole length, and not just a narrow trench, but about 40ft wide. It really made one despair for the survival of those small businesses, they were doing virtually no trade.
