A Weight Lifting

On a bit of a visual metaphor theme at the moment.

Yesterday's blip was an attempt to describe how the climb from depression and anxiety can be visualised with an upward spiral.

Well today has been a better day for me. Ruth and I spent it having lunch by the sea at Clevedon and then having some shoe therapy, i.e. Ruth rewards herself with a pair for all the loving support (....endurance...) she gives me. Anyway, whilst wondering the shops I saw this straight sided, silver topped vase and todays picture began to germinate.

Depression can feel like a paralysing weight but with time and the right support that seemingly permanent oppression starts to lift, impossible though that may feel at times.

So, here is a weight lifting .... a stone rising through water.

How to do it:

Fill vase with water.
Two light sources, top light source will help pick out bubbles, and an off camera flash.
Set camera on manual and continuous shooting mode.
Drop stone after stone until you get it just right.
NOTE: Bottom light source is important because when you invert the final image the predominant illumination will be from above and we are hard wired to perceive light from above - thus the image will feel to be the correct way up, completing the illusion that the stone is rising. See here for setup, poor photo though.
