The Hill House : Charles Rennie Mackintosh

The Hill House, Helensburgh (1902-4). Designed by Mackintosh for the Glasgow publisher Walter Blackie. We met Mum and Dad here today, and enjoyed feeling the warmth of the sunshine sitting in the garden. The blue sky moments had to be recorded, few and far between at the moment.

I asked about the small tower in the garden - it was designed by Mackintosh specifically to store the tennis rackets and nets, and most probably the sledges. Seemingly in winter, the Blackie's used to sledge down the steep Upper Colquhoun Street to the town. I like the way the small tower compliments the larger one beyond in the main house.

The harling is deteriorating in many places around the building, causing damp and rot within the house. Discussions are taking place on the preservation of this unique and beautiful house.

I love visiting this place, so much beauty in the interior fittings, many designed by his wife Margaret. Regulars to my journal will know how much I admire the work of this architect, a master of his craft.

I've blipped here before, a little more info in this entry.
