Chimney at sunset

A beautiful day in the North East today. On our return from Newcastle we went on the road out of Hexham and came across the Stublick Chimney, just as the sun was going down.

This 100 foot high chimney was an essential part of the 19th century lead-mining industry of the North Pennines. A flue, over a mile long, connected it to the iron ore smelt mills at Langley and the fumes from the mills condensed on the cold walls of the flue, keeping them away from the workers, vegetation and animals.
