volcano.

This the view of Mount Ruapehu taken from the train which travels most of the length of the North Island. It is the highest peak in the island at 2797 metres and I am proud to say I climbed it some twenty years ago. It is an active volcano and has a large lake in the crater. In 1953 it erupted and the lake burst, washed away a railway bridge and sadly 151 were lost when the train plunged into the raging stream. Today it looked majestic rising up above the surrounding farmland .
