Empty Bike Racks ...

... in Holland--unimaginable, except here, in winter in Scheveningen, a beach resort just outside the Hague, where we are staying until tomorrow. We took a tram to get here, with our day tram ticket. It's late afternoon, as the shadows suggest. We had spent most of the day at the Gemeentemuseum, a temple of modern art just outside the center of the Hague.

The museum featured a superb exhibit of paintings by Mark Rothko, an American expressionist painter who is one of my favorites. He wrote about the emotions and even the religious feelings his paintings might (or might not) evoke.  The organizers  encouraged this, with a sign at the entrance encouraging the visitors to maintain silence in the presence of the paintings.  And there were a number of side bays which displayed one painting at time, inviting contemplation.  Indeed, I have never been so emotionally moved by an exhibition of art.  It was a wonderful experience.
