The High Line in New York Meat Packing District

The High Line was constructed in 1934, as a way of taking the ground level railway from the Hudson Yards down the West Side close to Hudson River to the Meat Packing District off the street.

It passed through buildings at first floor level thus removing dangerous interactions with pedestrians and traffic and making access from the Meat Packing Businesses easy.

In the 1950s this traffic went onto the roads and in 1960 part of the High Line to the south was demolished.

It was noticed that the disused elevated railway was the home to plants and flowers and wildlife.  Following a long campaign by many prominent New Yorkers and support from Mayor Bloomberg a section of the high line was opened as a linear City Park in 2009.  This has now been extended and the High Line Park is a great success.

On a January day when the temperature was 28F, it was full of walkers and joggers.
