Bread mountain

The surplus food cafe received 100 sliced loaves today, plus dozens of eggs and several gallons of milk from a local wholesaler that offers us  goods which are on or close to their Best Before dates.
Under the terms of the arrangement we can't hand these things out directly to individuals but we can pass them on to organizations like food banks or other charities to make use of. And in the near future we will be setting up a shop/distribution scheme that people can join and collect the spare food in return for whatever donation they can afford.
Until then there will be plenty of sandwiches, eggy bread, toast, bread & butter pudding and custard being served  in the cafe over the next few days.

There's a consensus now deploring the wastage of edibles discarded by supermarkets but it's important to remember that 50% of the food that's thrown out comes from our own homes, according the very informative Love Food Hate Waste website.
