Riding a bike

For every milestone there is a time and for Callum, today one momentous one was reached. In reality, the milestone was achieved yesterday, but that day was matched with Reuben earning his first karate belt and this actual moment pictured here was the first I saw him ride his bike, that sweet smile of delight across his face.

Whether it be 3 or 4 or 5, Callum had no rush to learn to ride his bike, til now, at the ripened age of 6. Perhaps it was that he was never motivated til now and we might forget the essence of motivation in our haste to tick off milestones. Instead perhaps his mind was filled with travelling and exploration from Mexico to Russia, skiing and soccer, karate belts and swimming trophies and above all, art. That conflict we have within us that the years are flashing past at lightening speed and our desire to slow things to a moderate pace. Today I can put aside that nagging parental insecurity, will he ever ride a bike? Let's enjoy the journey as Callum is doing so ably here, not the destination. It's all too fast.
