Helping me appreciate beauty

Sometimes I become a little blasé about the beauty of this city. Then I see a place, a scene, that's not so beautiful, and I appreciate the beauty more. Someone once told me the reason we have bad restaurants is so that we can appreciate the good ... I do wonder, though, do we really need reminders of the not-so-pleasant before we remember the good things?
