I have chosen a Spirit Level. This is a small pocket version with a screwdriver piece at the ‘pen’ end.
Once again, for best viewing, click on the two little arrows at the bottom right of the text.

Early spirit levels had banana-shaped curved glass vials. These vials are incompletely filled with a liquid, usually a coloured spirit or alcohol, leaving a bubble in the tube. They have a slight upward curve, so that the bubble naturally rests in the centre, the highest point. At slight inclinations the bubble travels away from the marked center position.
