forest floor

We haven't had any rain in Hanmer Springs since 28th December.  The South Island is the driest it has been for many years so we have total fire bans and extreme fire danger warnings.

Most of the forests are closed to walkers, bikers and vehicles, and we can't get access through the woodland walk and reserve, although the Heritage forest tracks near the village are open so mollyanme can still go on our favourite walks.  However it is so dry the leaves are falling from the trees eventhough it is only mid summer and there is a lot of dry debris on the forest floor.  I did wonder this morning how would we get out of the forest if there was fire ........... might have to study the maps and work out some escape routes!!
