Two-man trenches

Recent clearance work has exposed a series of seven two-man V-shaped trenches running parallel to a large rectangular earth banked enclosure (right-hand side). This is the site of a searchlight position which was manned from 1940 to 1945. On August 26th 1940 the site was almost destroyed when two high explosive incendiary bombs landed in the garden of the pub just to the north damaging six houses and bringing down the telephone lines. Now it looks like it will be destroyed by the local council's plans to plaster houses all over the heathland.
