Rosy bitterling (Rhodeus ocellatus)

The Rosy bitterling (Rhodeus ocellatus) is a charming fish, easy to keep in coldwater aquaria. Like all bitterlings, this species spawns in freshwater mussels, which sadly are not easy to keep in aquaria. Females use their long ovipositors to deposit their eggs between the gill filaments of the mussel where they will be protected and well oxygenated. This female is ready to spawn but I’m afraid I don’t have any mussels to offer her.
