York Railway Station

When it was completed in 1877 it was known as 'a monument to extravagance', on account of its size and complexity. The 800 ft-long-train-shed, was the biggest in the country and the highest, the roof being 42ft above ground supported by iron pillars.

Designed by North Eastern Railways' architect Thomas Prossen the station was at the heart of the network and by 1910 some 350 trains a day were passing through.

It is impressive as it is built on a curve and so the trains can be heard long before they burst onto the scene.

It is where as a child every holiday that we had started and finished.
