Cassis Cliff

Nice drive today taking the slow route from Marseille to Bandol after setting off early from Martigues.
The sea-cliff in this picture, at 4OOm is the highest in Europe. The rock from where I took the photo is limestone.  Hence the white Marseille Calanques going back west.  Onwards east, from this sea-cliff, the rock is gneiss. This is where the great uplifting of the Alps finally meets the sea.
On the creek, which lies on the fissure between the two rock types, is a beautiful little town called Cassis - very photogenic, but I chose to upload this one.  A fantastic road then climbs the sea-cliff opposite offering superb views.  It's calle the 'route des Crêtes.
