Coconut Macaroons -- Fail?

I always thought of a macaroon as being a French cookie. However, some culinary historians believe they came to French via Italy. Wherever they come from, they've been showing up in cook books since the 1700's.

Some might consider this chocolate macaroon as a "fail" because it is not plump and piled high like one would usually associate with a macaroon. 

While aesthetically this might not be what a macaroon should look like it sure tastes delicious!

I'll have to make these again for my gluten-free eating nephew. These have no flower!
