The Pioneer Memorial - Glenelg

Today we enjoyed our first ever Blip Meet in Adelaide with visitors from the Northern Hemisphere. We met Kaz18, husband Andy, their son Alex and his partner Louise, at our favourite Glenelg cafe, "Zest". They are here till early next week visiting from the UK.

After the blipmeet Paladian and I went to Moseley Square at the end of Jetty Road in order to photograph this wonderful memorial.

It is 12.9 metre high made from local Kapunda marble with its base of Murray Bridge granite, and set between palm trees. This is not a war memorial as many may think at first glance.

It is the Pioneer Memorial unveiled by Governor, Major-General Sir Winston Dugan on Sunday 27 December 1936 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the State of South Australia, and to honor the early settlers.

On top of the monument is a bronze replica of HMS Buffalo, the ship on which Governor “elect” Hindmarsh and other early settlers arrived in Holdfast Bay (Glenelg) on the 28th December 1936. My family was not connected with this ship but they were one of the early settler families in this state.
