The Backwaters, Kerala

We travelled to Alleppey where we boarded a houseboat for an overnight stay. The backwaters are very scenic with palm trees lining the canals and rice fields behind. The whole area is below sea level and water is regularly flushed through the rice fields while the plants grow.

There are a variety of boats on the water from large houseboats, ferries taking people from one side to another to fishermen. This shows a fisherman mending his nets after the day's fishing. The Following day we saw them scraping up mussels from the bed of the water.
