Derelict Thursday

This is the old administration building of the Newcastle Gas & Coke company.  There used to be gas works on the site.  It is quite a large site in Hamilton North that is fenced off as the owner doesn't appear to know what to do with it and the land is contaminated.  This building has some plaques on it and on the front it says 1911.  The building was built a bit earlier apparently but the gas works closed in 1985.  The building was renovated in 1995 but has sat idle and is going to ruin.  Vandals set a fire in a building to the back in 2013.  I remember there used to be a brick wall running the perimeter of this large block which fell down like 9 pins after the 1989 earthquake. 

The sandstone work on the building is rather lovely I thought.
