Springwell restored

The inscription, in Corfe Castle's West Street, reads:


    THIS  WELL  WAS  RESTORED
TO  COMMEMORATE  THE  WEDDING
                            OF
     H.R.H.  PRINCE  CHARLES  AND
           LADY  DIANA  SPENCER
                  29 JUNE 1981

Despite its appearance in this photo, this structure is small and inconspicuous.  It directly abuts the roadway.  I have known the village for several decades, but never actually noticed this feature until today!

I guess that it is (or perhaps was once) known as the Springwell, as the land directly behind it is Springwell Close, a housing development built on the site of the village's former slaughterhouse.

It is not big enough to provide a shelter, except for fallen leaves driven by the wind, and it is clearly not used for pumping water.  But I am sure that the restoration work will have tidied it up.

(But where is the plaque in commemoration of the royal divorce?)
