Dawlish Station South Devon Railway

Dawlish Station was part of I K Brunel's South Devon atmospheric railway from Exeter and Plymouth, and was built to his broad gauge in 1846.  The experiment only lasted for a year, and was replaced by steam traction.

The line can be seen crossing the stream in the centre and to the right are the station buildings opened in 1875.  In 1876 the South Devon Railway was absorbed into the Great Western Railway.  In 1892 Brunel's broad gauge of 7ft 0 1/4" was replaced by the standard gauge of 4' 8 1/2".

Last year this stretch of track was damaged by storms and Plymouth and Cornwall were cut off for several weeks.
