Funkenfeuer

Traditionally on the first Sunday of Lent, the Funkenfeuer is made of a pile of ex-Christmas trees and is lit to banish the winter. In our village it's been moved to Saturday for the sake of young children who have to go to kindergarten or school on Monday, but also want to go to the bonfire. The firefighters group (it's a youth group like guides or St John's Ambulance) sell drinks and sausages. It was snowy walking up the hill and really muddy at the top but I'm glad I went. I love a good fire, and these ones are particularly sparky - that's what the 'Funken' part of the name means.
