Old petrol bowser at Belair

This old petrol pump is outside one of our very favourite restaurants in the area and we like to go there quite often.

From what we can make out, this was the first petrol pump in Belair, and one R.J. Halstead applied for the licence in 1934.  There is very little about the history of the Sheoak Café, but it’s been on the site for quite some time, and evidently you could get petrol there in the 1930’s.

Note the calibrated glass cylinder at the top. The desired quantity of fuel was pumped up into the cylinder as indicated by the calibration. Then the pumping was stopped and the gasoline was let out into the customer's tank by gravity. It is lucky that it still survives as I know of no other like this one in the Adelaide area.
