New Year, New Life

Leaving their mark

The initials carved into this listed wall in Myddleton Passage (close to New River Head/Sadler's Wells) were engraved by bored policemen patrolling this rather seedy (then) passage in Clerkenwell in the C19. There's an interesting article from 2006 in The Guardian if you want to know more.

I knew it was there but had never photographed it before. Must go back and study in more detail.  Took this in passing while on a really interesting guided walk about the history of social housing in Islington (optional walk as part of my course). There has been some really visionary social housing in the borough, particularly the old Borough of Finsbury, over the years.  Lots of Lubetkin. A shame that so much of it has now been sold off under the right to buy - but I'll refrain from further comment on that...
