Tulips, but not from Amsterdam!

I followed the instructions very carefully ..... cut 2cm from the bottom of the stems, leaving the flowers in the wrapping  and standing the bunch in water for up to an hour .... to  no avail!  The tulips had already decided to form their own arrangement in the vase.
