Texas Independence Day

Texas declared independence from Mexico  on March 2, 1836 to create the Republic of Texas.  During the first battle for Texas independence in 1835, settlers in Gonzales flew the "Come and Take It" flag  above the town. The Mexican army wanted the settlers to turn over a cannon that had been given to the town earlier.  The flag is on the right side of the photo, and contains a cannon and the words "Come and Take It."

The flag in the center is known as the Zavala flag, which was proposed in 1836 at the signing of the Texas constitution.  There are no records of this flag actually being adopted as the Republic of Texas flag.

Texas became part of the United States in 1845. On the left is the current state flag of Texas.
