PICTURE POSTCARD

This tiny church is probably one of the oldest village churches in Hampshire and once formed the centre of the small village of Plaitford.
But before boundary changes in 1895 the church and village was in the neighbouring county of Wiltshire.
Historians reckon that the original village would have solely comprised the church, the rectory, and nearby Manor Farm, but today the main centre of population is now focussed around the A36 road from Southampton to Salisbury, some little distance away.
St Peter's Church lies near the county boundary, and is one of the picture postcard churches of the county. Its stone flint outer walls are reckoned to date from the 13th century and the vestry at one time could have been a small chapel, and contains the only original window.

Of particular interest the font is said to be a modern restoration from part of a 13th century font and has four spurs on the angles.
