Historic Pubs

Is the Three Tuns the oldest pub in Romsey? It is reckoned to be at least 300 years old and is a Grade 11 listed building and its exterior charm is extended to the fully oak-beamed interior.
 
I went by the pub today in the town’s Middlebridge Street, but time was when a pal and I were regular Saturday evening visitors. My friend had a business in the town centre and it always seemed a fitting place to meet up once a week for a wind-down pint, maybe three, at the end of the week.
 
At that time we both lived in Romsey, so driving considerations were not a problem and we could always arrange to be picked up.
 
A stream which runs the length of Middlebridge Street flows in a culvert beneath the outside seating area at the front.
 
A while back it was closed for a time and refurbishment has breathed a new lease of life into the pub while retaining all of its old-world character.
 
It’s now owned by the same team which runs the much renowned Chesil Rectory restaurant in Winchester, and has its own Michelin ‘Bib Gourmand’ recognition for the past two years.
 

Shame that my pal Brian and I no longer live closer!  And is it the oldest pub in the town?  I really don’t know,  but at least it has survived while many of the town’s original pubs have long since disappeared.
