Memories (3): Kriegsapfelküchlein

During clean-up I found this notebook which belonged to my grandmother. It is from 1934 and she noted from 22nd January to 21st March what was prepared for lunch and dinner. She was 20 years old then and it seems that she attended a cooking school. It is still a pleasure to read the menus today. A rich choice of different ideas, often two warm meals a day, with soup, main course, pudding, fruits or cheese.

Things changed some years later. On this loose sheet I found a recipe from 1942 with the title “Kriegsapfelküchlein”, may be best translated as ‘war apple fritters’. A recipe for a tasty version with the minimum of fat.
