The Chessmen's Jigsaw

The chessmen, as it's raining,
and they're tired of games of chess,
decide to do a jigsaw:
they soon sort out from the mess
of pieces spread out everywhere
those few that form the frame.
“We're good at this,” one white pawn says.
“We're sure to win the game.”

“It's not a game of win or lose,”
a bishop soon explains.
“It's more a game of observation –
using eyes and brains.”
“Or, in your case,” a black pawn jokes,
his face one wicked grin,
“you'll have to do without the brains.”
And so the taunts begin,

as well as minor squabbles,
such as, “Bags I do the sky!”
which, unusually for jigsaws,
is the easy part, that's why!
Before too long, the pawns are gone
to play computer-chess.
And who is left to puzzle on?
I'll leave that for you to guess!

Some hints and clues: this Sunday,
if you're seeking pause for thought,
you'll find at least one bishop's
made his sermon rather short;
one king and queen skipped breakfast,
as did one knight and rook,
and who's that lying down so
he can have a closer look …?
