A Collector of Oddities

Blue Tit lollipop

Cyanistes caeruleus

Can also be known as Parus caeruleus  but according to Wikipedia (which is never wrong) the British Ornithologists Union treats the Blue Tit as quite different from other tits. Thanks to Dave H for drawing my attention to the name difference!

I bought myself a book on extinct birds a wee while ago which is both awesome and awful at the same time. Did you know there used to be a bird called the Kaua'i Mole Duck which was flightless and almost blind and probed for invertebrates on the forest floor? Or how about the Stumbling Moa-nalo, which was given this name as it tended to fall into cave holes and get itself preserved in the fossil record?
