There are two chimneys on the moor near where I live. These sit at the end of long stone-built flues that carried the fumes from the lead smelting mill in the valley to the top of the moor in an attempt to stop killing the locals with toxic lead fumes.

I ran past these this morning; there was frost on the ground and a tremendous wind blowing, but the curlews and golden plover have returned to breed and the skylarks were singing.

The clatter of lead mining and smelting is long gone...
